80th kilometer to get there, on one of the western slopes of the Cerro de La Muerte.

An amazingly stunning habitat for birds and flora species makes this region an unforgettable wonder.  Because it’s an unexplored location, it’s the perfect habitat for one of the most beautiful birds the Lord has created, the gleaming Quetzal, a wonderful emerald green bird with a long tale with amazing colors…if you can take its picture, you will have the best photo album with a great souvenir.  Considered to be among the most striking birds in the world, quetzals nest in the nearby cloud forest and can be seen most of the year. However, they are most frequently spotted during the months of April and May, which is their breeding season. Besides the quetzal, a number of other birds found here include tanagers, woodpeckers and hummingbirds, making this area truly a birdwatchers’ haven.

A paradise for nature lovers, hikers and trout fishers as well, San Gerardo de Dota is a tiny farming community that sits on the narrow valley of the Savegre River, an excellent place to catch trout. The fly fishing season out here is in May and June, while lure fishing is at its best from December to March. Sitting at an altitude of 2200 meters above sea level, this town offers tourists crisp mountain air, lush cloud forests and some of the best birding in the country, making of a truly unforgettable vacation destination.
